Urhobo faces extinction

The Urhobo language, people and culture may be wiped out of the face of the earth if something urgent is not done to savage the tsunamic danger facing the Urhobo over its not existence as a subject of study in over 85% of the schools in Delta Central Senatorial district.

This was parts of the discovery today by the organizers of the 'Dr Ovie Ughwanogho Annual Urhobo Challenge' on the spot assessment of the language situation in 90 secondary schools in Delta State.

The findings revealed that the language is not being taught in over 85% of both primary and Secondary schools in Urhobo land. Lack of Urhobo Language Curriculum and inadequate professional teachers were some he reasons given for the non teaching of the language I'm the schools.

Some of the schools visited include Evwreni Girls Model, Ekiugbo Grammar School, Afiesere Grammar School, Otovwodo Grammar school, Ogor Technical College, Igbru College, Oghara Secondary School, Moishe Grammar School, Omo Secondary School,  Upono Secondary School, Orogun Grammar School, Moishe Secondary School, Asagba Secondary School, Ovwor Mist Secondary School,  Olomu Secondary school, Oteri Secondary School, Oto-Udu Secondary school, Okpare Girls Secondary School, Okpare Secondary school, Oviri Olomu Secondary school and Otujeremi Secondary School.

It would be recalled that the Ukoko R' Eghweya of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) led by Chief (Mrs) Christy Siakpere recently paid a courtesy visit on the former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori to prevail on the Delta State Government to approve the 9-year basic education curriculum for Primary 1-6 and JSS 1-3.
